Jansen’s association with the sawing illusion didn’t end with his iconic creation. In fact, it was just the very beginning of a long and lasting relationship. In the 1920s, Thurston toured America with his large-scale show of spectacular illusions, and unable to personally satisfy the public’s appetite for live magic, he coproduced additional shows that were presented by other performers. Jansen was chosen to be his first protégé and, after adopting the stage name Dante, became the perfect personification of the public’s perception of a prestigious prestidigitator. Indeed, the New York Times once described the silver-haired, goateed magician as a cross between Mephistopheles and Buffalo Bill, with just a hint of Santa Claus.

My museum is home to Dante’s sawing-in-half apparatus. Moi-Yo Miller costarred in this illusion thousands of times.
